Black-billed gulls looking to nest
For the past two months, black-billed gulls have been gathering prior to breeding on the Ashley River. On 19 October a fresh in the river occured. The gulls seemed determined not to be washed out, and were even bringing in nesting material to doomed nests.
They subsequently congregated about 3km downstream. On 22 October there were at least 2,200 birds gathered on an island much better suited to provide protection from floods and predators. This is very similar to the size of the colony that arrived on the river last year.
